A Revolution?

From IGN's website:

And

I'm reserving judgement, but the more I think and see it, the more I think it's going to be something worth buying.

Re: A Revolution?

It will play EVERYTHING!

Right now, I wish I could travel through time. Go buy a Revolution, and then give it to myself when I was 7 and begging for an original NES. Then I'd be set for life.

"It looks like a sex toy"

~ My girlfriend on the Revolution controller.

I can see why it makes sense... christ all it needs to do is play Mario Party anyway.

Oh, moving to Gaming Discussion btw.

Well it does have the rumble feature, but somehow I don't think it'd be the most effective at such a role. ;-)

I'm guessing that maybe the revolution plays games specifically designed for it too. I'm not sure though, just a guess, honest.

Someone isn't getting the run down here:

The "remote control / sex toy" appearing thing is a VIDEO GAME CONTROLLER for the upcoming Nintendo system. You know, the thing you push buttons on to make Master Chief shoot Covenants on the XBox system? That's what this is.

Its because you are a nerd.

On topic though, I don't know about that thing...I suppose I will have to give it a go first. I hate adjusting to new controllers.

Nintendo's always been good at making things that are usually pretty quirky but end up being really fun. I think I'll have to give this one a go but I'll likely not buy it at least for a while.

Back on topic, IGN has a blurb about some potential uses the controller could have. And I believ VGCats links to a video promo.

It's very cool, but I hope that game developers don't go out of their way to try to use the motion sensor.

"Introducing... the next James Bond game! You see, to reload, you flick the controller up and then do - " "NO! JUST USE A DAMN BUTTON!"

On the other hand, I could see this being very good for FPS'es... it'd be like a light gun without having to buy a light gun...

Re: A Revolution?

I'd like to see maybe one or two games be specialized towards only the sensor, but I think most will simply use it as an added feature: Fly planes more adeptly, aim for Metroid Prime 3, play games in Mario Party, Dodge by pressing the trigger in SSB and jerking the controller left, right, up or down, etc. etc.

I can't believe you can't read what I posted: That VGCats has a link to a video, not that VGCats made a video. I'll directly link it for you, since clearly you have two problems:

1. Reading my posts and replying with anything constructive.
2. Checking for yourself the source of things.

zomfg a video that VGCats linked to thats from IGN.

Seriously, MVTek, I'm not sure what your issue is with me, but you shouldn't let it get in the way of your reading comprehension.

I'm glad Nintendo did something different. I mean, looking at the 360 and the PS3, it's an either/or situation. Nintendo's direction seems more in line with simple, basic fun.

However, it's new technology, and considering how the eye toy isn't practical for anything other than what it is specifically designed for, there's always one eyebrow reserved for how this design will effect sales. Especially since there will be situations where you'll have to buy another peripheral in order to play a good game *cough*CrystalChronicles*cough*.

PA linked to a rather interesting tidbit written from the view of a past game designer / game artist (small scale), and his views on Nintendo and the direction they're going with the Revolution.

Linky.

As far as I can tell it's just his opinion and his experience, but it's an interesting viewpoint nonetheless. Time will tell eh?

No word yet, Mo_Steel. My guess is around $300 USD (similar to the other introductory level next gen consoles).

If the ability to download NES, SNES, N64 and GameCube games to your Revolution is true... I'll be getting one hands down.

<sigh> I want them all...

MVTek sighs because he will be a graduate student next year and therefore not have any money to buy said next gen consoles. It's a terrible dilemma.

Now, if I didn't care about my career choice, I could go to work making probably 40-65k a year easy... I could have all three then. But... I wouldn't be making the best career choice imo.

So again, MVTek sighs... because he's a good student. Yes, precious, he is.

Re: A Revolution?

Supposedly these are possible Revolution specs.

Quote:
System 1 Modified
CPU:
1 IBM Custom PowerPC 2.5 GHz with 256 KB L1 cache and 1 MB of L2 cache (an L3 cache is rumored). It’s Dual Threaded

13 billion dot product operations per second

Revolution GPU:

ATI Custom based RN520 core. The "N" stands for Nintendo, and is because the ArtX team is with them, that is why it’s an "N".

GPU core at 600 MHz. Will support up to 2048x1268 resolution, HD support is still being decided. Will have 256 MB’s of 1T-SRAM (the RAM is much better due to some tweaking, compared to GC’s RAM. The latency and Cells are much more efficient and faster. Around 1.2 ns is the latency, on average).

32 parallel floating-point dynamically scheduled shader pipelines.

Polygon Performance: 500 million triangles per second theoretical, average in game would be around <100 Million/sec>

Shader Performance: ~50 billion shader operations per second

Revolution memory:

512 MB of 700 MHz 1T-SRAM

Other bits and pieces:
Revolution will support a PPU chip (Physical Processing Chip). There will be 32 MB’s of its own RAM, which will link to the CPU and GPU and the Controller.

There will also be a separate sound card that will support only DD 5.1 – DTS 7.1, rumors has it will have 16 MB’s, like the Cube DSP
