When it comes to RAM, either go Corsair XMS or Kingston HyperX. Also, I'd reccomend getting an nForce 3 or 4 MoBo and an AMD Athlon 64 processor. Go from there.
agreed totally on the processor, the 64s are the way to go right now.
i don't know enough about the 64 mobos to give you good advice in that area.
get onboard NIC, but plan on getting pci sound and pci-ex or agp video
Personally, I would go for a solid 32-bit processor. It took 32-bit operating systems and software a long time to become main stream. From the state of things that I'm hearing in my Computer Engineering classes, it will continue to be domained by 32-bit for awhile yet. Yes, 64-bit has it's advantages and if you have the cash, go for it. But if you're looking to save some money, a solid 32-bit based proc will be fine for whatever you want to do.
note, with the integrated controllers on the athlon64s, they far outperform 32-bit processors even in 32-bit processors
And I'm a big fan of OCZ RAM... but actually RAM is a rather personal decision.
yeah Athlon 64 roxxors your soxxors so to speak.
ram as long as it's CAs2.0 is gona be fine. Kingston Hyper X, Corsair XL/LL/Pro, OCZ gold/platnium. Two or four 512 sticks.
go with an N-Force 3 250GB mobo if you can, socket 939 along with the CPU, and get a 90nm 64 as they perform a bit better and are cooler.
as far as this stuff goes alot of it is according to budget,
