Go on, click me! You know you wanna... (http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=1804&ncid=1804&e=4&u=/washpost/20040330/tc_washpost/a34300_2004mar29)
It's about time this study was done, well, it was awhile ago, but still. I feel that file sharing isn't the cause, nor does it cause (hello awkward sentence) a drop in record sales. It's the simple fact that there ARE PEOPLE WHO DON'T BUY CD'S!! I rarely bought CDs and when I did, it was usually of a particular band (DMB, BNL). Granted, I now have 11,500 MP3s, I still occasionally buy a CD, at the same rate I did before I ever discovered the joys of downloading music. Had file sharing never come around, I would own the same number of CDs as I do now. However, I can agree that there are some people who don't buy CDs anymore because now you can get the songs for free. /mild_rant

i bought more cds after i got napster.
what were they?

i ripped them.

I agree... I honestly still do purchase a lot of CDs... but as soon as I get home I rip them into mp3s (256kbps @ 44.1KHz of course).
That's why I also really love iTunes. I'm not ashamed to say that I do purchase mp3s now. Sometimes I really like a song but not the whole CD. Now I can support the artist for making a good song but also not buy the crap that comes with it. It's 99 cents... why not buy it?

Heh, if I paid 99 cents for all the songs I have...yeesh, I would've paid over $11,000. Few of these songs are worth it, yet I agree with supporting a good song as opposed to a bad song. Perhaps it will be an incentive to the artist to produce a good song, rather than 'filler songs'.

Exactly why it's illegal chief.

tee hee, I know...isn't it great? But seriously, of those 11,000 some songs... The only ones I really listen to...I already have on CD...the rest is more for others who may want to "replace CDs that were stolen from their car" wink wink.

$0.99 ain't that bad of a price, but I'm not buying. Waiting for WMA support on the iPod (come on HP hurry the fuck up) and then I might use one of the WMA stores.

i hates the wma
You may hate it, but I believe that it will last longer than AAC. Right now iTunes is the only store that supports AAC, and the iPod is the only major player that supports AAC. While WMA is supported by more stores and players.
If I were a betting man, I would put my money on WMA.

i'd put more money on OGG than wma, because i feel like the wma would take my money and run

ogg is a great codec, but it has some issues, few players support it, and it has no DRM so no Record company would want to touch it. Other than that it's a great way to store your music.

ACC isn't that bad... only thing that pisses me off about it is the encryption... but that's the whole point of using the new codec.
Plus my hearing isn't too hot now anyway... I can't hear anything above 17000 Hz...

I never said that ACC is bad, I said that it's currently on the losing side, unless Apple does something about it.

Well honestly... isn't that what Apple DOES? They create standards for things and usually they don't get passed on... except for things like FireWire.

And even then something like USB 2.0 comes out and manufacturers saturate the market with it making it pretty dead.

The only problem is that you music is locked in. I personally feel that wma will win the music store battle because of it's popular support.
But myself, I won't purcahse any music through that until there is store that I know will last a while, and allows re-downloads. I say redownloads becuase 5 years ago, I didn't have the equipment to hear the difference between say a 112, and a 192 song, but now a days I do.
In the future a 192 or 256 song may not be enough quality.

Such insightful comments.
Little to no record companies would allow their music to be sold on line without some form of DRM. Right now the DRM is being enabled by the content providers. One should also mention that AAC has DRM built in too.
Now about the compressions, yes AAC is technically superior, but that is because they are using the mp4 codec as their base, while wma was designed based on MP3s.
