Riddle student makes emergency landing... onto a pickup truck. (http://www.suntimes.com/output/news/cst-nws-emer15.html)

lollerskates.

(I know it doesn't say Riddle student in that article, but I was too lazy to find the article that said that's where he went to school. However, it is true.)

That banner towing company is so shoddy. I'm sure you've seen them towing at the beach and formerly at the Speedway, some Super Cubs and 172s. The Super Cubs are total crap. Everything has been stripped off them in the name of saving weight to tow the banners. They hardly have a panel, just gauges hung in front of the pilot, and an av radio duct taped to the dash. There's no doors on the Super Cubs, I'm suprised there's a windshield, and there is no cowl on the engine. The seat is no more than a lawn chair. The fabric is riddled with patches of all kinds, and I'm amazed to see they fly...legally at that. The 172s don't fare much better. They're so underpowered to be flying some of those banners. Back home, we had 2 150s, 3 Super Cubs, 1 Piper Pawnee and a Citabria, all but the Citabria had 180hp engines in them with climb props and STOL kits (Yes, STOL kits on a Super Cub). They were always in perfect condition (I take partial credit for that, hehe). While I'd recommend banner towing as the most fun way to accumulate hours after getting your commercial, I don't encourage going to work for that guy. Ever. And that's about enough outta me.

I'm rather interested in doing banner tow work, anyone know who's worth going to for the sign-off or working for? Methinks it might be good summer work between classes and my other job.

All I can say is who NOT to go work for...there's a guy who's based out of Hollywood, FL who runs operations around the country, including the Massey outfit. VERY shoddy company, very shoddy work, IMHO. The best in the country, is where I used to work (I'm not being biased, I'm being serious), Air America Aerial Ads, Toledo, OH. There's one guy who operates out of the Depot Storage on the other side of the airport (by the Volusia School bus garage). I tried to go work for him a few years back but he didn't want me as ground crew, he wanted a pilot. It seemed a much better operation than the other guy, but last year or two years ago, there was a crash that killed the owner and a passenger. Official cause is aileron failure...rumor is sabotage by the Massey outfit (cutting the aileron cables just enough...) I think his company is still flying, though, so that's worth checking out. I could give you a phone number of my old boss and you could give him a call and see what else is down here...if you tell him you're a friend of mine, he'll point you right, for signoffs, training, the works...

Well at least it was a testament to what amazing pilots us Riddle Jerks are.

"Hell, I bet you I could land on the back of a pick-up truck."

I wish I could land on the back of a pick-up truck. I'm having a hard enough time as it is with runways.

Runways? BAH! Piddly-poo, Try taxiways! And if that's not enough, how about FBO ramps? Oh yeah...that's right...I went there. And I know someone who took off on the pavement between hangars! But you didn't hear any of this from me. Who? What? No.

eccentric4,

I don't know, the one up at Flagler was the one that had the fatal crash. It seemed to me that the aircraft at Massey ranch weren't too bad, never really seen them have any problems while I was down there.

Yes the aircraft are stripped, but they are work horses.

Oh, I agree they're work horses, but they don't need to be stripped down to be so...Back home, we had pristine aircraft, and they could easily out perform any of the aircraft down at Massey. I watched their Super Cubs struggle on some of the banners they towed. It's one thing to be able to tow it, it's entirely another to be able to tow it well and safely. The equipment I saw wasn't quality checked. I know the old addage where it's tried and true, but I'd rather have something that I've personally checked and know it'll perform it's duties, and not come apart mid-flight.

As for the fatal crash, I was pretty sure it was the guy who has his office here in Daytona, but I know he flew elsewhere as a base. Perhaps it's the same guy, and Flagler is his base of operations.

PS, I'm not saying the company I worked for wasn't perfect...we had our share of crashes in the past that we learned from, and we learned most from a competitor banner tower, who was too shoddy to comment here, but I have funny stories about their dangerous pilots...one who was called Crash. However, when in trouble, our pilots knew exactly what to do, the best course of action, and there were no fatalities. In total, we've had 3 crashes, (3 aircraft, 2 of them totaled) and 1 landing on a golf course (ATC instructed him to fly with no fuel to a different airport that was too far away to reach because he was a banner tower (post 9-11))
