View Full Version : investigating a new mouse, the mx1000
so, my trackball (http://www.microsoft.com/hardware/mouseandkeyboard/productdetails.aspx?pid=011) doesn't have the resolution and response that i want from a pointing device for shooting at people.
i've been using trackballs since the days of team fortress classic, when i was the clan's dedicated pyro - great for spinning in circles and lighting people on fire, but it just can't keep up with me anymore.
so i'm looking at the mx1000 (http://www.logitech.com/index.cfm/products/details/US/EN,CRID=2135,CONTENTID=9043) based on a coworker's very positive experience with it as well as a glowing review from tom's hardware (http://www.tomshardware.com/consumer/20040924/index.html).
i hit a couple threads on the OF about how to get the various (numerous) buttons to bind to functions in planetside, which seems to indicate that the device itself works just fine
does anybody use an mx1000 with planetside? any problems? do you see a significant improvement?

I've got one guy in the IS that purchased the latest Razor mouse which is pretty close and loves it to death.
I have an older MMX wireless logitech mouse that is about 1/2 supposed responsiveness of the MX1000 and I have absolutely NO problems killing people. It just took figuring out how far the receiver should sit back from the mouse to get the right sweet spot.
In theory the Mx1000 should be a few steps up from mine... and accordingly better. :P

Dude, that's MY mouse you're eyeing there!
I've been runnin the MX1000 since my return back in October, and I must say that it's done pretty well in tracking. Not regretting it a bit.
My only complaint is the setpoint software you have to use. PlanetSide doesn't detect all 10 "buttons" on the mouse, so I get screwed n gotta bind keystrokes to alot of keys.
Also, for the past month or o, I've been having problems with the leads not connecting. I blame my mousepad for that, though.
leads == the recharging contacts?
yeah, i'd heard about binding letters to get things to run, i can handle that. my trackball only has 7 possible bindings, and the mouse i have now, only five... i don't mind fiddling to get more out of it.
i aspire to be as precise as rev, and i'm hoping the improved resolution will help me out.

The question is - how much of a difference are we REALLY talking. With Planetside's bulky hit box detection... it's not like the different between a head shot and a chest shot...
Am I missing something?
well, the trouble i experience with my current device is in two specific areas. one is flying - i've spent plenty of time in aircraft - real and planetside's - to be confident in my abilities to control them precisely, but i can't track targets. other problem area is sniping, at far enough distances, i can't even lay crosshairs on the targets, it'll jump from side to side, and it takes absurd amounts of ball-roll to make it ratchet one unit of change.
also, the obvious, of course, that it's really hard to shoot and turn at the same time with a trackball.
i'm hoping a new device will help.

I personally am not a fan of wireless at all, so I can't recommend one. I really have no reason too I guess, I just don't trust it I suppose.
I love my mx518, adjustable dpi is uber win.
Iused to have a razor..man that thing was sweet, but built like a cheap chinese toy from a vending machine. After two returns from broken mouse buttons, I gave it to a friend. Though I hear the newer model is more reliable.

I'd go for the mx518 too. I hate wireless mice, they always die when gaming and require you to install usually shitty drivers.
The mx518 is win though.

I agree, save some money and get the mx518, Unless your dead set on getting wireless.
i hate mouse cords. it's one of the reasons i used a trackball for so many years. a little kink hitting the edge of the desk changes the resistance in one direction, the mouse binds up, and i miss and die. nothing's more aggrivating.
previously, of course, battery failure was more aggrivating, but the mx1000 uses a lithium ion battery pack and has a meter right on the side. all the reviews i've seen indicate that a single charge lasts more than three weeks.
I can tell you that virtually every night someone has a problem with their wireless mouse. Usually it runs out of power. I use a corded MS ergonomic intellieye 3.0 mouse. It's big and doesn't make my hand hurt like the smaller ones do (I used to get pretty bad hand pain, but none at all now).
I have implants, third person and crouch mapped to the extra buttons. Personally, I don't have a problem with the cords on my desk and it all works just fine. Plus its cheaper and will likely last forever.
If you don't mind having a cord, the Razer Diamondback Plasma is probably the best on the market.

The cords not a big deal if you get a bungy, they are cheap, and some nice "gaming" mouse pads come with them
I've been using a MX1000 since it came out, and have absolutely no problems with it. One of the reasons I have no problems with it is I turn off some of the features like the side scroll, and change around some of the button assignments so I don't have to do key or letter binds (I'm not in front of it at the moment, but if someone is interested, I'll let you know the settings I use - mostly pass through or off completely). Their hardware is good, but the accomanying software has always blown the big one. I don't have a problem using any buttons for PS and most other games.
The batteries do indeed last a long time. If you game 20+ hours a week, you'll need to charge it about every other week. When the meter is down to one tick, you'll want to charge it ASAP since it's not very fun to suddenly lose your mouse functionality in the middle of a big campaign.
I had a Mx900 previous to this one, and i must say they still don't have the battery contacts set right. You frequently have to play with the mouse in the cradle to get the battery contacts to connect. That would be my only complaint about it.
Yeah, it's wireless, but the response is WAY there as long as you stay within 6-8 or so feet of the broadcasting unit. It also fits comfortably in larger hand sizes. It may have a bit big of a footprint for smaller hands, however. You should be able to get a feel for one at a local PC store.
It only comes in a right-handed version as well.

Good mouse, but I can't deal with the speed. Its fine for gaming, but when I go to use the UI widgets...like to swap things in inventory...I lose control.
I have an MX700, coreless/rechargable and I love it. Battery life is great (as long as I remember to put it back on the cradle every 2 days or so - I actually try to put it on every night)... never had a problem with responsiveness. It just comes with a heavy price tag.

Hmm, I think I might pick one of those up. I've already managed to wear the "Dell" on my mouse off. This is the second computer I've used the thing on though.
